Should your greenhouse stand on its own or lean against an existing structure? It’s one of the first layout decisions you’ll face, and the answer depends on your property, your climate, and what you plan to grow.

A freestanding greenhouse is the better choice when you have the yard space and want maximum light exposure from all directions. You can orient it optimally for your latitude, scale it to any size, and place it wherever drainage, sun, and wind conditions are best. Most kit greenhouses (Palram, Grandio, Outsunny, etc.) are freestanding designs.
The trade-off: you’ll need to run water and electricity from the house (or go without), the structure is fully exposed to wind on all sides (increasing heat loss), and it’s less convenient for daily use in bad weather.
A lean-to greenhouse is ideal when space is limited, your best south-facing exposure happens to be a house or garage wall, and you want convenient access to utilities. The shared wall acts as thermal mass—especially if it’s brick or stone—absorbing heat during the day and radiating it into the greenhouse at night. This can significantly reduce heating costs in cold climates.
The primary limitation is light: the shared wall blocks sun from one direction. A south-facing lean-to still gets excellent light, but north-, east-, or west-facing attachments will struggle with insufficient sun for most crops. Lean-tos are also constrained by the host wall’s length and height.
If you have a south-facing wall and limited yard space, a lean-to is an excellent, cost-effective choice that benefits from the building’s thermal mass and utility access. If you have the yard space and want maximum flexibility, light, and growing area, go freestanding. In cold climates, the lean-to’s thermal advantages are especially compelling.
