Greenhouse Ventilation Sizing: Measurements to Take First
Before buying an exhaust fan or automatic vent, measure the enclosure and identify how fresh air will move through it. A fan label alone cannot predict actual performance in a specific greenhouse.
Measure the space and openings
Record length, width, sidewall and peak height, roof pitch and where vents could be installed. Note glazing type, shade cloth, nearby buildings and how wind reaches the structure.
Plan the air path
A powered exhaust fan needs adequate intake air. If the only inlet is too small, airflow can be restricted. Consider whether passive roof vents, side vents, circulation fans or shade might be more suitable for the greenhouse design.
Consider heat and humidity together
Hot air removal and internal air movement solve different problems. Track daytime temperature, nighttime temperature and humidity at plant height. A climate controller should be paired with equipment correctly sized and safely wired for the environment.
Check practical constraints
Consider noise, electricity, rain protection, insect screens, replacement parts and the maintenance access you will need. Consult equipment guidance and qualified tradespeople for electrical installation or structural modifications.
