Transplanting From Greenhouse to Garden

The greenhouse gives your plants a head start — but that advantage only translates to garden performance if you transplant correctly. Moving plants from the protected, stable greenhouse environment to the variable conditions outdoors is the most stressful event in a plant's early life. Temperature swings, wind exposure, direct sun intensity, and different soil microbiology all hit the transplant simultaneously. A well-executed transplant loses no growth momentum. A botched one sets the plant back by two to three weeks, erasing the head start the greenhouse provided.

When to Transplant

Timing depends on three factors: the plant's readiness, the weather, and the soil temperature. Plants are ready to transplant when they have developed a strong root system that holds the soil plug together when removed from the cell tray, and when they have at least two sets of true leaves (not counting the cotyledons). Leggy, pale seedlings with weak stems need more time under stronger light before they are ready.

Weather considerations vary by crop. Warm-season transplants (tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, basil) should go out only after the last frost date when nighttime temperatures consistently stay above 50°F. Cool-season transplants (lettuce, kale, broccoli, cabbage, onions) tolerate light frost and can go out two to four weeks before the last frost date. Planting too deep (except for tomatoes) suffocates the crown of most transplants.
