How greenhouses actually fail in autumn
Ask people what kills a hobby greenhouse and they say frost or snow. It is wind, and it is usually an autumn gale rather than a winter storm, because autumn is when the first serious wind arrives at a structure that has spent a calm summer quietly working itself loose.
The failure modes are consistent and worth knowing, because each one has a different fix.
- Uplift. Wind over a greenhouse roof generates lift, exactly as it does over a wing. A light aluminium structure that is not anchored to the ground can be lifted bodily and moved or flipped. This is the failure that destroys the whole greenhouse at once.
- Racking. The frame parallelograms sideways under lateral load. Panes pop out of their channels, the door stops closing, and the structure ends up permanently out of square even if it survives.
- Panel loss. A single pane or polycarbonate sheet lifts out at a corner, and once one goes the wind gets inside and pressurises the structure from within. This is why a greenhouse that loses one panel often loses several more within minutes.
- Base separation. The frame lifts off its base rail while the base stays put, usually because the frame was never bolted to the base properly in the first place.
The order of vulnerability.
An unanchored greenhouse on a soft base is the highest risk by a wide margin. An anchored greenhouse with loose glazing clips is the next. A well-anchored, well-clipped structure with a diagonal brace at each end is unlikely to fail before the trees around it do.
Anchoring, by base type
Soil or grass
Ground screws or auger anchors driven into the soil and strapped or bolted to the base rail. Screw-in anchors hold far better than driven stakes because they resist pull-out along the whole thread rather than by friction alone. Use one at each corner as a minimum and one at each midpoint on a longer structure.
Soil condition matters. An anchor in soft, saturated autumn ground holds less than the same anchor in summer-dry soil, which is unhelpful timing given that is exactly when the gales arrive. Go longer than you think you need and drive them before the ground goes soft.
Concrete, paving or a hard base
Expanding masonry bolts or chemical anchors through the base rail into the slab. This is the strongest option available and, done properly, effectively removes uplift from the list of concerns. Drill, brush the hole out, and use a bolt rated for the load rather than the cheapest available.
Timber base frame
Common on kit greenhouses and often the weak link, because the frame is bolted to the timber and the timber itself is sitting on the ground doing nothing. Anchor the timber to the ground with ground screws or driven stakes, then bolt the greenhouse to the timber. Two connections, both of which need to exist.
Renting, or cannot dig
Ballast rather than anchors: paving slabs bolted to the base rail, or heavy sandbags strapped over the rail at each corner. Less good than a mechanical anchor but far better than nothing, and completely reversible.
Bracing against racking
Anchoring stops the structure leaving. Bracing stops it deforming. Most kit greenhouses ship with minimal diagonal bracing because bracing costs money and does not show up in a showroom.
The cheap fix is a diagonal in each end wall and, on longer structures, a diagonal in each side wall. Aluminium angle, a steel cable with a turnbuckle, or even a timber batten screwed across the frame will all convert a rectangle that can parallelogram into a triangulated structure that cannot.
Check the door frame too. On many models the doorway is the largest unbraced opening in the structure and the point where racking shows up first — if your door has become hard to close over the summer, the frame has already moved.
Holding the glazing in
Panel loss is preventable and cheap to prevent. Walk the house before the gale season and check every pane is fully seated in its channel and held by intact clips at both ends. Replace missing and sprung clips; they cost almost nothing.
Polycarbonate panels have their own failure mode: they are held in a channel with clips, they expand and contract more than glass, and they walk sideways over a season until one edge is barely engaged. Push them back into the channel and add clips.

Do it in September
Anchoring work in September is an hour with a driver and a spanner. Anchoring work the afternoon before a named storm is a scramble in the wind, into ground that is already wet, with whatever hardware the local store still has on the shelf. It sits at stage three of the fall changeover sequence for that reason, alongside sealing and insulation, and well before the first gale of the season.

- Is the frame mechanically fixed to the ground or to a slab? If not, this is the whole job — do it first.
- If there is a timber base, is the timber itself anchored, and is the frame bolted to it?
- Is there a diagonal brace in each end wall?
- Is every pane fully seated with clips intact at both ends?
- Does the door close and latch cleanly? If not, the frame has already racked.
- Are there trees or fence panels upwind that could come down onto the structure?
