Managing Humidity in Your Greenhouse

Humidity is the invisible factor that makes or breaks greenhouse growing. Too high and you invite fungal diseases that can wipe out a crop overnight. Too low and plants dry out, growth stalls, and spider mites flourish. The sweet spot for most greenhouse crops is 50–70% relative humidity, but hitting that target consistently requires understanding where moisture comes from and how to manage it.

Where Greenhouse Humidity Comes From

Four primary sources: plant transpiration (plants release moisture through their leaves as a natural part of photosynthesis), soil evaporation (wet soil surfaces constantly release moisture into the air), watering (every watering session adds moisture to the greenhouse atmosphere), and external humidity (humid outdoor air drawn in through vents).

In a sealed or poorly ventilated greenhouse, these sources can push humidity well above 90%, especially overnight when air cools and can hold less moisture. That’s when condensation forms on leaves and surfaces—the trigger for botrytis, powdery mildew, and damping-off disease.

Monitoring Humidity

You can’t manage what you don’t measure. A digital hygrometer with min/max recording is essential kit. Place it at plant canopy height, away from direct sun and water sources. Wireless models (ThermoPro TP60, Govee H5075) let you check readings from your phone. Record daily highs and lows for at least a week to establish your greenhouse’s humidity baseline.

Reducing Humidity (The Most Common Challenge)

Ventilation is your primary tool. Opening vents and running exhaust fans replaces moist greenhouse air with drier outside air. Even in winter, a brief midday venting cycle (10–15 minutes when outside temps are at their daily peak) flushes excess moisture without losing much heat.

Water in the morning. Morning watering gives soil and plant surfaces time to dry before evening temperatures drop. Evening watering means moisture sits on leaves all night—an invitation for fungal pathogens.

Space plants properly. Crowded plants trap humid air between them. Adequate spacing allows air circulation to reach all leaf surfaces.

Use drip irrigation. Overhead watering wets leaves and dramatically increases humidity. Drip irrigation delivers water to the root zone only, minimizing atmospheric moisture addition.

Avoid bare wet soil. Mulch exposed soil surfaces to reduce evaporation. Gravel floors in walkways minimize surface moisture compared to bare earth.
