Why autumn specifically
Condensation forms when air holding water vapour touches a surface cold enough to push it past its dew point. Autumn assembles those conditions better than any other season, for a reason that is worth understanding rather than just working around.
Through summer, soil and glass are both warm. Through deep winter, both are cold and the air holds little moisture to begin with. Autumn is the crossover: the soil is still carrying summer's stored heat and evaporating steadily, while the glass has started losing heat to clear night skies and is running genuinely cold. Warm wet air meets cold glass, and by dawn every interior surface is wet.
Then the second factor arrives. You have just sealed the house for winter — insulation up, drafts stopped, vents latched. Air movement, which is what normally carries that moisture away, has stopped along with the drafts. The result is still, saturated air sitting on plant surfaces for hours at a time.
That is the exact specification for gray mold.
Botrytis cinerea needs a wet surface and still air, and it does its best work in cool conditions rather than warm ones. Autumn's combination of falling temperature, high humidity and a newly sealed structure is not a coincidental problem — it is a purpose-built environment for it.
Spotting it early
Gray mold announces itself in a few ways, and catching it at the first is the difference between removing a leaf and losing a crop.
- Fuzzy grey-brown growth on dead or dying tissue — the classic sign, usually starting on a fading leaf or a spent flower rather than on healthy growth.
- Soft brown lesions on stems, often at a leaf join or a pruning wound, which spread and can girdle the stem.
- Ghost spotting on fruit — small pale rings where spores landed and germinated but did not establish. A warning sign that the fungus is present and looking for an opening.
- Seedlings collapsing at soil level, which is damping off — a related problem with the same underlying cause of cool, wet, still conditions.
Botrytis is a wound and weakness specialist. It rarely attacks strong healthy tissue directly; it establishes on something already dead or damaged and moves from there into what is alive. Which is why the first control is not a spray.
Control one: remove what it feeds on
Every dead leaf, faded flower, snapped stem and fallen fruit in the house is a landing site. Clearing them is unglamorous and it is the single most effective thing you can do.
- Pick up fallen leaves and fruit at every visit, not once a month.
- Remove yellowing lower leaves from standing crops before they die.
- Take spent flowers off promptly, particularly on anything overwintering.
- Carry debris out of the greenhouse, do not pile it in a corner.
- Cut cleanly. Ragged tears and snapped stubs are entry wounds; cut back to a joint.
- Prune in the morning on a drying day so wounds seal before the evening damp.
Anything already showing mold goes in a bag and out, not on the compost heap next to the door.
Control two: vent, even when it is cold
This is the counterintuitive part, and the one people resist. On a cold day the instinct is to keep everything shut. But a sealed house does not stay dry, it stays wet, and the moisture your soil released overnight has nowhere to go.
The technique is a short vent at the warmest part of the day. Open a vent or crack the door for an hour or two in the early afternoon, when outside air is at its driest and warmest, let the humid air exchange, then close up before the evening. You lose a little heat and you dump a great deal of moisture.
Choose dry, breezy days over damp still ones. Venting into fog achieves nothing.

Control three: keep air moving inside
Venting exchanges air with outside. Circulation moves it around inside, and it matters just as much, because botrytis needs a film of water sitting undisturbed on a leaf. Moving air prevents that film forming and dries it faster where it does.
A small fan running on a low speed does more for winter disease control than most growers expect, and it costs very little to run. Point it along the length of the house rather than at the plants, so you get general circulation rather than a cold draft on one bench.
Spacing helps too. Crowded plants with foliage touching hold their own wet microclimate no matter what the room is doing. Give overwintering plants more room than feels necessary.
Control four: change how you water
Summer watering habits kill winter plants. Three changes:
Water in the morning, so surfaces have the whole day to dry. An afternoon watering leaves everything wet going into the coldest, stillest part of the night.
Water at the roots, never over the foliage. A watering can with the rose removed, or a drip line, both work.
Water far less. A plant that is not growing is barely transpiring, and winter overwatering is the commonest cause of both root rot and the surface humidity that feeds botrytis. Check by weight or by finger before watering rather than by schedule.

On sprays
Fungicides exist for botrytis, and they are the last line rather than the first. The fungus has a well-documented history of developing resistance where a single product is used repeatedly, and a spray applied into a still, wet, debris-filled greenhouse is treating the symptom of an environment that will simply produce the problem again.
Fix the environment first: clear the debris, vent daily, move air, water in the morning at the roots. If you then reach for a product, follow the label exactly, observe the interval and the harvest gap, and rotate active ingredients rather than repeating one.
Where this sits in the fall work
Every job in the fall changeover sequence has a humidity consequence. Cleaning removes the debris botrytis starts on. Sealing improves heat retention and worsens air exchange. Insulation reduces condensation on the glass but cuts light, and weaker plants are more vulnerable. Fleece over a bed protects from frost and traps moisture underneath.
None of that is an argument against doing them. It is an argument for pairing each one with a ventilation habit, so the sealed, insulated house you have built stays a growing space rather than becoming an incubator.
