A greenhouse bed is not a field
Cover cropping is settled advice outdoors: bare soil over winter erodes, leaches nutrients and loses structure, and a living cover fixes all three. Under glass, two of those three arguments weaken considerably, which is why the answer here is genuinely open rather than obvious.
There is no rain to erode a greenhouse border and no rain to leach it. What remains is the soil-biology argument — living roots feeding the microbial community and holding structure — and that argument is real. But it now has to compete against something that does not apply in a field: the bed is inside a heated, expensive, space-limited building that you may want to use.

The case for a cover crop
Living roots feed soil life. Root exudates support the fungal and bacterial community that a bare, cold border loses over four months. Under glass, where organic matter burns off faster than in cold garden soil, that community is worth protecting.
Structure is actively maintained. Deep-rooting covers such as winter rye break up compaction that repeated watering and foot traffic create in a narrow border.
Legumes fix nitrogen. Field beans and clover deliver nitrogen for the following crop, which in a border that grows hungry tomatoes every year is a genuine contribution.
It suppresses weeds and prevents the surface capping that bare, occasionally watered indoor soil develops.
What to sow
- Field beans — nitrogen fixing, hardy, easy to pull or cut. The default choice.
- Winter rye — the best for structure and biomass, but vigorous and needs cutting down well before planting.
- Phacelia — fast, fine-rooted, easy to incorporate, not fully hardy in cold areas.
- Crimson clover — nitrogen fixing, lower growing, good where you want a light cover.
Sow immediately after clearing, in early autumn, while there is enough warmth and light to get establishment. A cover crop sown in November will barely germinate before the light threshold arrives.
The case for bare soil with a mulch
You get the bed back. The strongest argument, and the one that decides it in a small house. A cleared border is where winter salad, overwintering plants, curing crops and stored tubers go. A cover crop makes that space unavailable for six months.
Cleaner disease break. If you have had a soil-borne problem, a living cover can host pests and, depending on the species, share a family with your main crop. Bare soil with a surface compost mulch gives a genuinely clean interval.
No winter irrigation. A cover crop under glass gets no rain, so you are watering a crop you will not eat, all winter, in a house where you are otherwise trying to keep humidity down.
No spring incorporation delay. A cover crop has to be cut, incorporated and left two to four weeks before planting, because decomposing green material temporarily ties up nitrogen. Bare mulched soil is ready when you are, and early spring is exactly when you want that.
Less to go wrong. Compost on the surface, worms take it down, done. The routine version of the fall soil reset.
The slug problem, honestly
A dense cover crop in a sheltered, frost-free greenhouse is excellent slug habitat, and slugs under glass do not get the winter knock-back they get outdoors. If you already have a slug problem, a cover crop can make spring considerably worse.
It is manageable — a lower-growing cover, careful monitoring, cutting down earlier — but it is a real cost and it is the factor most likely to make a cover crop the wrong answer in a small house.
The verdict
Small greenhouse, one or two borders, used through winter: bare with a compost mulch. The bed is worth more to you as space than as a soil-building exercise, and top-dressing delivers most of the benefit.
Larger house, or a border you genuinely will not use until spring: cover crop. Field beans are the safe default; winter rye if compaction is your specific problem.
Border with a history of soil-borne disease: bare, mulched, and consider partial soil replacement instead.
Border that has grown the same hungry crop for years: cover crop with a legume, then top-dress in spring. This is the case where the nitrogen and biology arguments are strongest.
Undecided: split the borders. One of each, one season, and let your own soil tell you. That is a better answer than any general recommendation, including this one.
